The Tigray Regional Office of the Capacity Development Support Facility (CDSF) conducted a Training of Trainers (ToT) on homestead gardening for nutrition training in Wukro town from 22 – 25 March 2018.

Nine men and four women representing the regional Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Development (Extension and Irrigation Directorates), Zonal agricultural offices and Zonal capacity development officers (ZCDOs) participated in the training. Dr Yigzaw Desalegn, external consultant, Meskerem Mulatu CDSF National Gender and nutrition specialist, Hailu Abay, CDSF Tigray Capacity Development Specialist, facilitated the training.

The objective of the training was to equip participants with knowledge and skills on household level home gardening in order to realize the role of home garden in curbing malnutrition.

Participants engaged in a variety of learning methodologies as well as practical field exercises in a nearby fruit nursery site and farmer’s homestead to enable them to acquire necessary skills and knowledge on selection of appropriate home garden site and types.

In closing the session Almaz Seyoum, Fruit Senior Expert with Tigray Agriculture and Rural Development office, said the following about the training:

pic4“The training was very interesting. I really learned a lot and I want to thank CDSF for organizing the training. The training incorporated very useful and applicable home gardening types for fruit and vegetable production in small holder households. I had some knowledge about fruit production before the training, but I have now developed the skills and would do it differently than the way I used to do in the past.”
